The making of the City of Dragons vol 1 cover. I did a lot of research into middle age graphic novel covers so that I could make a cover that would be able to be immediately recognizable as one but also stand uniquely on its own.
Final artwork
Idea 1: I knew I wanted a mysterious feel centering the two main characters as if they were walking into an unknown land.
Idea 2: I tried a more personal approach in this iteration.
Idea 3: This one was a simpler cover adding the theme of the sea.
Idea 4: A combination of the 1st and 3rd idea.
Next iteration: We decided to bring the character forward. I loved the theme of blues and yellows here.
Next iteration: it was decided that there should be more detail in the environment. We also added more colours to give a sense of impending trouble ahead.
Final artwork: The final drawing was handed over to the designer Phil Falco who popped out the colours more to stand out better as a book cover on a shelf.
The final artwork was created in CMYK in Photoshop.
